Social Media Measurability

One of the most important facets of online marketing is measurability. Datran Media’s recent “4th Annual Marketing & Media Survey” found that measuring and understanding audiences was a priority for the majority of respondents since it could increase brand awareness, performance or revenues. However, producing hard metrics in social media advertising remains difficult. Increased site traffic is generally the leading metric used to measure social media success, but by itself does not justify heavier investment in social media.

“For the few marketers who do attempt to apply quantitative measures to their social marketing efforts, the metrics they use are not terribly sophisticated,” noted eMarketer CEO and co-founder Geoff Ramsey in the eMarketer Insight Brief “Seven Guidelines for Achieving Social Media ROI.” “Most marketers today do not invest sufficient time, effort or money on social media measurement.”

Datran’s respondents, with about 72% having Facebook and Twitter profiles—were most likely to track all their online campaigns based on clicks, conversions and impressions. A gap exists, however, between finding and monitoring appropriate metrics and actually quantifying the results in a meaningful way. To remedy this, marketers must connect business goals, such as increased sales and leads, to social metrics before they can quantify social media return.

How To Get a New Site Listed in Search Engines

It may be a shock to Internet-newcomers, but getting a brand new site picked up by search engines is NOT easy. Search engine discovery is based on several aspects of web design, site age, and Internet knowledge. Experienced Internet users are able to link their new sites to their older sites so that Google, Yahoo! and MSN Search can discover them quickly. What do you do to get a site indexed if you don’t have any existing sites established?

How Search Engines Work
Understanding the mechanics behind search engines is crucial knowledge to have in today’s world. “In order for your website to show up in a search result your pages must exist in the search engine’s index. Each search engine has an absolutely massive index and it’s constantly updated every minute of every day. The search engines have what are called bots or crawlers or spiders, basically computers that ‘pretend’ to be browsers surfing the web devouring content like hungry monsters. Their job is to make sure the search engines have the most up to date index of web pages possible so that when a person uses a search engine they get the most relevant response available.”

Now the goal is to get the spider to crawl your page. How do you accomplish that goal?

Directories
Submitting your site to a directory is a great way to get links heading your way. Directories exist to simply list websites, usually broken down by category. All you need to do is fill out a form and depending on whether submissions are manually or automatically approved, your link will show up in the directory with a period of time, usually 24 hours.

The problem with directories is they are essentially link farms, no content and lots of outbound links. Consequently they usually have very little clout in the search engines and since your link is sitting in amongst possibly thousands of other links the little search engine spiders may never find your site.

Leave a Thought on a Blog, Forum, or Bulletin Board
This strategy is good, but delicate. You would never want to just leave your website name on a comment just for that purpose- you need to put down some contributing information as well. If your website is listed alone in a comment it is considered SPAM. This is because people will most likely end up deleting your comment, even if you think the link to your site is valuable.

“The best way to go about this is to have a signature file (most forums have a function for this) that allows a few lines of self-promotion to be included at the end of your posts. Enter the community, get involved in the discussion and contribute. Now obviously you will have more knowledge to draw from if you pick communities based on topics you are familiar with and preferably are relevant to your site. Not only do you improve your chance of search engine spiders finding your site, you might get some real humans clicking your signature and visiting your site as a bonus (this is in fact a good general online marketing strategy to get more traffic to your site).”

Beware of the NoFollow tag default set on blogs. This tag will not let the Google spider crawl your content.

Another alternative is to start your own blog. This does require more work, but if your content is good then other bloggers may post their links to you. Then, you can build a network around yourself allowing the Google spider to crawl right onto your site. When writing your own blog, you also have the option of linking pages from your website- for example “About Us” can be linked to your name and go to the About Us page on your website.

Press Releases
“This technique is easy enough to implement but faces the same issues as directories because so many people make use of it you may get lost in the crowd. You can go to a site like PRWeb, submit your press release about the news of your new website launch and they will publish it for journalists to make use of. A good press release may even circulate all over the Internet but at worst you will be at least published on PRWeb (there are others PR sites out there – try a search for “press release distribution” or similar).”

Google Sitemaps
Google provides a sitemap submission system that gives you the tools to directly communicate with Google to let the search engine know when your site updates and ensures your entire site is indexed.

Link Love and Paying for Links
“Link love is a relatively easy thing to be on the receiving end of. You have probably heard of the favor bank, the social currency of our world. You can open an account with almost anyone by making a deposit by simply doing them a favor. Maybe you’re really good at graphic design so you can create a logo, or perhaps you’re an accountant so you can offer tax advice. You can then make a withdrawal by asking for a link to your website. Favor currency flows quite freely and can easily be accrued by doing good deeds.”

Conclusion
Getting a brand new site indexed and listed on search engines is just the beginning of Search Engine Optimization. Trying to raise your site from the very bottom of the index to the top result for key terms is a long process but this step should not concern you. Some things you just have to learn as you go.

What works better…? Web 2.0 Internet Marketing or Traditional

What will prove most beneficial: Web2.0 or traditional marketing?

When it comes to new marketing strategies using the Internet’s “search and converse tactics,” compared to traditional marketing, target segments are reached at higher rates at a lesser cost. However, the more tactics you use, the more your messaging determines your visibility and your profitability.

Messaging is everything you say, do, how your website, marketing materials and even your employees present themselves. To avoid any communication problems it is crucial to maintain the same face across all mediums. If you excel in one area of these messaging mediums, but lack in another, a major marketing problem arises.

Traditional marketing can be a lot easier to maintain consistency when compared to online marketing. “Once you make your website more interactive, build search traffic, and begin to use social media, you’re suddenly engaged with multiple conversations, audiences and environments. Plus, other sources start picking up your messaging. Getting mentioned by bloggers, flagged by search engines, and having “fans” spread the word is a very good thing. But if you don’t have the right messages — and keep them consistent — it can be a very bad thing.”

Consistency does not necessarily mean repetition. Search engines and consumers do not like repetitive content. “If, for instance, your over-arching message is that you can save a customer money, don’t just repeat that phrase – amplify it with specific examples. Promote one example in a blog, promote another example in an online press release, and promote a third example in your traditional-marketing ad or mailing. All three examples support your overarching messaging. Plus, instead of one set of keywords, you’ve got three phrases that can bring your name up in searches. Make sure your website — your marketing hub — pays off on all three and you’ve got a great shot at converting consistent messaging about how you save customers money into new visibility.”

Along with consistency, keyword optimization also plays a big role. Keywords used in traditional marketing may not transfer over to online marketing. For example, a law office emphasized the words “litigation support” in their traditional marketing but received zero ROI for those words online. This is because prospective customers were searching for “lawyer, Richmond , VA ,” instead of “litigation support” online. Once proper keywords are chosen it seems obvious to utilize them, right? Sometimes we are distracted by competition, and lose sight of the big picture- what people are looking for. It’s important to choose specific words that optimize the service/product being offered.

“Bottom line: Messaging matters — and it matters in a 2.0 world more than ever. So before you market, message. Be absolutely sure that the messages you’re about to pump out onto the Web (and which, according to Trendwatching.com, will stay visible forever) are (1) right for your brand, (2) right for the media you’re using, and (3) right for engaging your specific audience. With a little upfront work on messaging, you can create a rich mix of new and traditional tactics that can quickly increase – and sustain – your visibility.”

How Smart is Your Phone?

The battle for the smartest phone has begun.

Since the beginning of the Blackberry other competitors have been designing and brainstorming for creating the next big hit. In today’s market for new smart phones, that can virtually do anything, competitors are really listening and accommodating their consumer’s wants and needs.

The iPhone, for example, gets a lot of attention from advertisers because studies have shown that their users can recall mobile ads more often than others.

Nielson Q3 data shows that Android users are surprisingly more likely to use mobile internet and video apps than iPhone users. Consumers of both these smart-phones are well ahead of the overall average user.

Most internet usage rates are accumulated from popular social networking sites. Recent studies show that iPhone owners are the most active on social networking sites, but Android owners are not far behind. On the other hand, Android-based users hold higher rates for using other activities such as capturing videos.

“Android users were more likely than iPhone owners to surf the Web and use maps and directions, according to an August 2009 study by the CFI Group. The survey also found that, while overall satisfaction with iPhones was somewhat higher than with Android devices, Android owners were happier than iPhone owners with those functions,” stated by emarketer.com.

According to StatCounter, iPhone uses still hold the top place for most internet visits on a mobile device; more than 38% of mobile web activity came from iPhones. Less than 6% comes from Android-based devices.
